Death Penalty to be introduced for rapists by Mandeep Rai

Bangladesh has announced that it is set to introduce the death penalty for convicted rapists. This follows protests in the country over the weekend after a brutal gang rape. Eight men were eventually arrested for the atrocious crime.  

The region has always had a high level of sexual violence against women and tensions have risen recently following more high profile violence. 

In Bangladesh alone this year, over 1000 rapes have been reported. This number of course, will be minuscule to the number of cases that go unreported. 

Many have welcomed this decision from the government, although there will still be a long way to go before the number of rapes in the country reduces.
